Book Transitional Justice in Brazil: Notes

B

Collective work organized by Eneá de Stutz e Almeida deals with the four pillars of Transitional Justice.
The book is the result of the Research Group of Transitional Justice in Brazil of the Postgraduate Program in Law at the University of Brasilia (UnB) and can be purchased at the Editora CRV website.

Synopsis
In the late 1980s, Brazil began the transition from a State of Exception to a Democratic State of Law. After the 1988 Constitution we started to build a democracy, but we did not fulfill the steps considered necessary. This lack is one of the causes of certain obstacles, conflicts and setbacks that we still experience today.
The pillars of the so-called Transitional Justice are four: reform of institutions; memory and truth; justice; reparation. This work brings together a collection of texts that intends to discuss, in a didactic manner, themes related to these four pillars. For this purpose, it is divided into four parts, preceded by a first chapter of an introductory and general nature.
These four parts correspond to the aforementioned four dimensions, containing texts that reflect on the Judiciary, the OAB, gender issues, the media, the military, strikes, the possibility of prosecuting torturers, just to name a few examples. In short: we wish to provide arguments for a qualified reflection, capable of preventing actions that bring back a dark period for Brazil, because, as we will see, we have not properly carried out Transitional Justice.
